How do I delete a mail account from Mac?

Many people ask this question, but it is not always easy to find the answer. You can find a lot of different opinions on how to delete your mail account from Mac – many of them are wrong. Follow these instructions for deleting an email account in Mail on the Mac desktop.

In order to delete a mail account from Mac you have to delete the related mailbox. This can be done through Mail application. In macOS High Sierra version 10.13 and previous, please use the steps as follows:

1) Go to ‘Mail’ app by clicking on ‘Finder’ → click on ‘Go’ menu on top toolbar → Press ‘Alt’ key on your keyboard → click the ‘Library’ option to launch it.

2) Then, double-click on ‘Mail Downloads’.

3) Locate and select an email account you want to delete (i.e.: Yahoo), press and hold down on that email’s folder(s) until all of the email folders start to wiggle and then release.

4) Select ‘Remove [email name]’ from the menu.

5) Verify the [email name] is correct, click ‘Move to Trash’.

6) If you get a message about not being able to remove some of the items in the folder, this means that particular mail folder was created by a system. In such cases, you can continue to delete the other folders in that account.

7) Finally, empty the ‘Trash’ and log out of your mail account/mailbox.

In macOS Mojave 10.14 and later versions:

1) Go to Finder → click on ‘Go’ menu on top toolbar → select ‘Utilities’ → double-click on the ‘Mail’ app icon.

2) Then, go to Mailbox menu at the top left corner of Mail window.

3) Select an email account you want to delete (i.e.: Yahoo), right-click on it and choose ‘Delete Account’. Confirm account deletion when prompted.

4) Repeat the same steps to delete other email accounts.

5) Finally, empty the ‘Trash’ and log out of your mail account/mailbox.
